Extending the Hunter Role

Using the experience gained so far at the Hunter Centre in two projects:
1. A member of the 'Evaluating in Teaching Working Group'
- attended the first meeting on Fri. 22nd Aug.
- allocated task: conducting a literature search scoping out classroom assessment techniques, focusing on:
o libraries
o large & small group techniques
o academic (higher education) areas

2. Preparing a presentation for HEDC
ABSTRACT: The changing nature of reference services on today’s campus is explored through an outline of the new ‘roving librarian’ position at the University of Otago’s newly established Hunter Centre. Practical issues that have emerged from this new direction, where reference services are taken to users, are looked at. Issues concerning how to gain student and stakeholder buy-in of this new direction, gains achieved so far as a consequence of being ‘on location’ with these groups, and through active involvement in teaching, attending relevant faculty meetings, and sitting in on student presentations. A practical example of this ‘out reach’ role inaction, with the librarian liaising with teaching faculty on plagiarism concerns, is outlined. Lastly, questions of how this new service is to be evaluated are posed.
